IMAGES FOR SOUNDS: Artist Covers for Music Records is the first exhibition at Villa Lontana that brings together in a single space over 140 records from the 1950s to today with artist covers expressly designed to give images to sounds. The exhibition considers collisions between visual artists and musicians, playing on the duality between visual and sound material, focusing not on artist records but artist covers for different musical projects: casual projects or real solutions for entire record collections. The central part of the exhibition presents the extensive collection of records by Giuseppe Garrera, musicologist, art historian and collector, including more than 100 albums and artist covers. This section of the exhibition traces an Italian editorial history from the 50s to the 90s of the artist’s cover for the record attempting a first census, in the absence of record and bibliographic repertoires on the subject. During the exhibition there will be two insights: a tribute to Sylvano Bussotti, who recently passed away, with some of his most extreme and ingenious covers for his musical scores on display – always from Giuseppe Garrera’s collection and many presented to the public for first time. The other study is dedicated to international and often more contemporary collaborations. This section will be constantly evolving throughout the duration of the exhibition, presenting different records to the public every week – often from the artists’ own collections and archives or from their respective record labels. The musical contents of the discs on display will be the soundtrack of the exhibition, a constantly evolving soundtrack chosen from time to time by the public who, upon request, will be able to listen to the contents and investigate the visual translations of images for sounds in space, ranging from music compositions. classical, popular music, experimental sounds of electronic music, techno tracks.
The exhibition is open to the public from Wednesday 23 February to Saturday 30 April 2022.
