FLUMEN – Climate Actions for parks and rivers in Rome –, is a multidisciplinary project between art, science and environmental and social activism, on the rivers and riparian green spaces.
FLUMEN was conceived by studio Andreco, supported by cultural department of the city of Rome, winner of the Eureka prize for art and science and carried out by the cultural association Climate Art Project with an important network of artistic and scientific partners: National Research Council, CNR IRET, CNR IBPM, La Sapienza University, Roma TRE University, MAXXI Museum, Palaexpo Special Company, Baruchello Foundation, Together for the Aniene Onlus, CSA-Semi di Comunità, smART Foundation, ARPA LAZIO, Agenda Tevere, Joint Cultural Initiatives . The Flumen project is also included in the three-year action plan devised in the Tiber River Contract relating to the river auction.
The FLUMEN project have several steps: data sampling through sensors and instrumentations for the water and soil chemical-physical-biological sampling and analysis. Citizens are frequently involved in the sampling process, with a citizen science perspective. Experiments that use macrophytes plants as bioindicator for the river condition and water pollution. Data are used for 2d and 3d graph and chart, data visualization, and art installations, wall paintings and art performance. The artistic and scientific output of the researches are also utilized to raise environmental awareness of the public and to create campaigning and environmental advocacy.
FLUMEN: THE PROJECT AT THE INTERSECTION OF ART AND SCIENCE ON THE RIVERS OF ROME IS RELAUNCHED.
The environment and the climate are at the centre of the FLUMEN project, that combines art with science, with a view to communicating with, educating and empowering citizens to take ownership of Climate Action and imagine a better future within the full respect of the ecosystems that we inhabit, create and protect. 2021 is dedicated to the redevelopment and planting interventions open to all on the Tiber river, Aniene river and the Parco di Veio. It starts on 10 April and ends on 7 May with a conference at Palazzo delle Esposizioni.
The Climate Art Project cultural association presents the programme for the second year of the Flumen project – Climate Actions for parks and rivers in Rome – conceived by Andreco – the artist and engineer specialised in environmental sustainability. Promoted by Roma Culture, the project is the winner of the Eureka Public Notice Rome 2020-21-22 edited by the Cultural Activities Department and is carried out in collaboration with SIAE and with an important network of artistic and scientific partners: National Research Council, CNR IRET, CNR IBPM, La Sapienza University, Roma TRE University, MAXXI, Palaexpo Special Company, Baruchello Foundation, Together for the Aniene Onlus, CSA-Semi di Comunità, smART Foundation, ARPA LAZIO, Agenda Tevere, Joint Cultural Initiatives . As in the year 2020, Flumen focuses on the IV Municipality of Rome, in particular the Aniene Natural Reserve and with other appointments along the Tiber and at the Parco di Veio. Meetings, walks, performances, exhibitions, workshops will involve adults, children and teenagers starting from 10 April in an initiative designed to rediscover the rivers’ ecosystems, that characterise and makes Rome so special, in a collective experience in contact with nature. “I believe it is fundamental to raise awareness and disseminate scientific knowledge related to environmental issues, rivers and green spaces, to feed a trans-disciplinary cultural debate and to build a truly sustainable society”, explains Andreco, whose research has been concentrated since 2000 on the relationship between art and science, on environmental sustainability and on the intersections between activism, anthropology, urban space, ecology, with an approach that flows into installations, videos, wall paintings, performances and of course projects of a relational nature and environmental advocacy.
In 2020 the project collected scientific data on the quality of river waters through a series of activities aimed at an audience of all age groups, with support from our scientific partners. Citizens conducted theoretical and practical lab analyses, to learn the basic techniques for water quality analysis and received an introduction to environmental monitoring. 2021 will be dedicated to the redevelopment of areas through planting campaigns. Good agroforestry practices will be rediscovered in a dimension that looks to the future, especially for the new generations.
A green classroom will be created, a work of Land Art, a public space accessible to all, that also has regenerative capabilities for the river’s ecosystem and the quality of the waters of the Aniene river. The planting project includes two circles of trees that delineate a space dedicated to citizens coming together to partake in environmental education. The “Pantheon of Trees” that will grow over time will be located near some schools whose students will be able to enjoy this place, as will the inhabitants and strollers of the Aniene Valley Nature Reserve.
Art and science will thus interact to imagine worlds, build a sense of awareness in citizens, to invent tomorrow together in a path that looks at life and its complexities.
This new decade, the organisers explain, is marked by an unprecedented environmental and climate crisis that requires a collective effort and a radical transformation of our social practices and cultural and production models. Without a change in the common vision on how to co-inhabit the terrestrial ecosystem and without a widespread awareness of environmental issues, the change of course will not happen. This can happen by putting the environment back at the centre of our reflections, raising the awareness of citizens, individuals, public administrations, new generations and of course the strengthening the public discourse and cultural dimension on issues related to the protection of biodiversity, regeneration, redevelopment, re-appropriation of public space and green areas, and best practices related to agriculture. In this sense, rivers, once central places of aggregation and exchange in people’s daily lives, return to take on a leading role in the Flumen project.

On Saturday 10 April a guided tour will take place along the banks of the Tiber, in correspondence with the cycle path, starting from the meeting point with the public indicated at the beginning of the Tiber Island bridge, Trastevere side (Municipio I). The walk will be led by the Climate Art Project Association and Prof. Simona Ceschin of the Roma Tre University, bringing together environmental associations and groups that are dedicated to the study of the Tiber River.
During the visit, after an introduction on the themes addressed by the project and by the research of Prof. Ceschin, who will be a reference point and term of comparison for the data collection, a spontaneous green mapping intervention will take place along the path with active involvement of the public. The mapping will be compared with one made many years earlier to verify how the composition of the spontaneous greenery and the biodiversity on the river banks have changed. For the identification of the plants, in addition to making use of the experts present, the public can use the mobile apps suggested by the organisers.

The meeting on Wednesday 28 April within the Aniene Valley Nature Reserve (Municipality IV), will be organised by the Climate Art Project Association and the Together for Aniene Association in collaboration with ARPA Lazio. The activity will be open to the public and will take place with the involvement of students from a secondary school in Rome. After an introduction to the issues of environmental education, students will actively participate in sampling operations, putting into practice the knowledge acquired.
The meeting will take place after the planting activity (April 17 third appointment), there will therefore allow for the control and evaluation of the work done, with a verification of the rooting and the eco-physiological state of the plants of the Aula Verde, using instruments to measure the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus. In addition, samples will be taken from the waters of the Aniene river in order to collect a further series of data points updating the state of the river to 2021. These will then be used together with those collected in 2020 and those that will be collected in 2022, during the third year of the project, to assess the state of the water and predict the environmental benefits resulting from the planting activity and the construction of the Aula Verde.
With this appointment, the training activity for citizens on the procedures for monitoring river waters, which began in 2020, will also continue.

The rivers of Rome are the protagonists of an important project between art, environment and science created by the artist Andreco.
Flumen, Climate Actions for parks and rivers in Rome, a project between Art and Science, conceived by Andreco, the artist/engineer who specializes in environmental sustainability, is promoted by the cultural association Climate Art Project.
The first event will take place on the 18th of September at 10 am: The public are invited by Flumen and Arpa Lazio to continue in the project of testing the water from the river Tiber which began in July. Together with the researchers, the participants will test and analyze the water fron Tiber.
Arpa Lazio will collect the analysis and the “raw data” to be used as a starting point for the comparison of the data obtained during the research phase. The organization of some participatory monitoring days will allow the public to follow and learn about the different phases and techniques used in the sampling process of the water and soil by taking an active part in the research work.
The dates in September:
On Saturday 19th of September 2020, from 10am to 3.30pm, in the Veio Park (Municipio XIV), a guided tour for the public will be held in the fields of the structure curated by the Climate Art Project Association and CSA -Semi di Comunità. There will be a public meeting focusing on new sustainable practices in agriculture and the Agroforest, expedient agroforestry practices that make it possible to integrate agricultural production with the presence of forests for the absorption of CO2. A collective lunch will be offered made from organic vegetables grown in the park.
The focal point of Flumen is the IV Municipio of Rome, in particular the areas of the Aniene, the Tiber and the Veio Park. Meetings, expeditions, performances, exhibitions, workshops will involve adults, children and teenagers in a project to discover the river ecosystem that characterizes and makes their city special, in a collective experience in contact with the nature. The first year of the project will be dedicated to collecting data, analysing and monitoring water and the surrounding terrain. Then it will proceed with the reclamation and redevelopment of the areas through planting campaigns and finally it will rediscover expedient agroforestry practices in an outlook aimed at looking to the future, predominantly with future generations in mind.
Art and science will try to interact to imagine different worlds and build a sense of awareness for city dwellers to reinvent the future together in a way that places life and its complexities as the focus of attention.
This project, which combines two supposedly incompatible worlds with the aim of focusing attention on the condition of rivers and parks in Rome, is the winner of the Public Notice EUREKA! ROMA2020-2021-2022. Curated by the Association Climate Art Project and CSA – Semi di Comunità, an open meeting will take place on the topic of new sustainable practices in agriculture and on Agroforest, the good agroforestry practices which integrate agricultural production and the presence of forests for the absorption of CO2. The meeting will be held by Climate Art Project alongside Associazione Insieme per l’Aniene, CSA Semi di Comunità, the Research Institute on Terrestrial Exosystems (IRET), the National Research Council (CNR), Roma Tre University and the scientific partners. Interventions will be held by Gianfranco Baruchello and Carla Subrizi, for Fondazione Baruchello, in dialogue with Andreco, curators Sara Alberani and Aria Spinelli, researchers and professors Laura Passatore, Simona Ceschin, Patrizia Brunetti, Francesca Pietroni and Marta del Giudice. Monday 28th September, h. 10 – 12, Casa del Parco nella Riserva Naturale della Valle dell’Aniene – An environmental didactic laboratory and water sampling of the Aniene river will be held within the natural reserve. Middle school students from the I.C. Piazza Filattiera 84 alongside Arpa Lazio will carry out an analysis of the waters, the sampling process and the elaboration of the data gathered.

THE STATE OF THE RIVERS IN ROME: THE DATA COLLECTED
The first year of Flumen comes to an end, an important project between Art, Science and the Environment conceived by the artist Andreco where the rivers and the parks are the protagonists. The three-year project will continue in 2021 and 2022: planting interventions are planned to improve the state of the waters of the Tiber and Aniene alongside artistic restitution interventions that will be held at Maxxi and Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

The first year of the project Flumen. Climate Actions for the parks and rivers in Rome between Art and Science, conceived by the artist and specialized engineer in environmental sustainability Andreco and promoted by the cultural association Climate Art Project. Flumen is a three-year project and will continue in 2021 and 2022. Intrinsically multidisciplinary, whereby scientific dissemination and contemporary art address increasingly urgent environmental and climatic issues, it also follows other projects based on rivers and carried about by the association, working towards the objective of disseminating an environmental culture and raising awareness on the importance of protecting and taking care of the rivers and parks in an urban ecosystem.
According to Andreco, rivers and parks are vectors for sustainable mobility, ecosystemic services, for blue and green infrastructures and a backbone for the sustainability of the entire city. The care of rivers and parks becomes thus fundamental for the health of the city and its inhabitants.
During 2020, the project gathered scientific data on the quality of the river waters through a series of activities designed for an audience of all age groups. Through the collaboration with the scientific partners of the project, who conducted theoretical and practical workshops, the citizens were able to learn about the basic techniques of data gathering for the analysis of the quality of the waters and received the introductory tools necessary to bring about environmental monitoring. This knowledge contributes to the construction of a fundamental cultural background which in turn allows for the development of a critical awareness with regards to the agents of pollution, an active spirit to limit its impacts, ultimately working towards finding solutions for the regeneration of ecosystems.
Throughout the six meetings of 2020, diverse groups of citizens walked along the banks of the Aniene river and Tiber river in Rome and analyzed the waters. In addition to the recurrent analysis, the data series provided by Arpa Lazio and collected between 2015 and 2018 on the quality of the water of the Aniene and Tiber prior and after the points confluence were studied in order to have a scenario on the trends in the rates of pollution of the river waters and the environmental criticalities.
To evaluate the ecological status of the water bodies, and the consequent quality of the water, two Macrodescriptors (LIM) of pollution levels were taken into consideration, as defined in the 2009 and 2010 integrations to the Italian Decree on Environmental Matters 152/2006, namely: the concentration of nitrates and the amount of oxygen present. The concentration of Mercury was also analysed, considered one of the Priority Hazardous Substances. The quantity of Nitrates is an indicator of contamination resulting from agricultural practices and human activities. The higher their concentration, the poorer the water quality. Both the Tiber and the Aniene showed a quantity of nitrates corresponding to a poor quality level (New LIMeco Index).

The quantity of dissolved oxygen, which is strictly correlated to the presence of nitrates, represents a measure of the impact of the pollutant load which initiates processes of oxidation causing eutrophication phenomena, thus leading to an uncontrolled growth of algae which causes a worsening of the water quality. Data from ARPA demonstrated low concentrations of oxygen in both rivers, corresponding to very poor quality of the water (New LIMeco Index). The interesting aspect is that despite the absolute value of both indexes analyzed is the same for both rivers, the Aniene river shows a growing tendency in the values of both the Macrodescriptors parameters, confirming a deterioration over the years of the quality of its waters.
The research group, composed by Laura Passatore for the CNR, Patrizia Brunetti for La Sapienza University, Simona Ceschin for Roma Tre University, Andrea Conte for Climate Art Project and Studio Andreco and Marta del Giudice for Insieme per l’Aniene Onlus, used macrophytes as indicators for monitoring water quality and designed a series of planting interventions, based on phytoremediation and phytodepuration techniques, with the aim of improving the quality of the soil and the water, to be carried about in spring 2021.
Based on the river flows which interest the Natural Reserve Area of the Aniene Valley and the already present green infrastructures, it has been proposed to create a “green room” composed of concentric circles of poplars and willows. The implant will serve both as a filter for rain and flood waters of the rivers as much as a space for meeting and learning about plant technologies as a solution to water pollution.
The last meeting of 2020 took place at Fondazione Baruchello, where the artist Andreco and Gianfranco Baruchello discussed artistic practices between art and nature and on current environmental issues. The debate was then opened to the scientific research group along with the curators and art historians: Carla Subrizi, Sara Alberani and Aria Spinelli. The three interventions were focused on the role of laboratory practices in contemporary art, a comparison between the Agricola Cornelia project by Baruchello and Climate Art Project by Andreco along with an analysis of new circular and social economies generated by networked artistic practices which implement good environmental and community practices. The debate led to a confrontation between points of view from apparently distant disciplines which allowed to define the complexity of the environmental issue between human beings and ecosystems, and between built space and natural landscape. It is ever more evident the need to pursue a multidisciplinary approach which overlaps the strict sciences with the social sciences and artistics practices to imagine possible sustainable futures to pursue.
Flumen will return in spring with new appointments open to all, albeit by reservation.
